Graphically, the game is absurdly beautiful, although it’s becoming evident how close to the resource ceiling Naughty Dog has come with this title. The presentation of Uncharted 3 has never really been in question. That’s not to say the situation isn’t resolved, it’s just not resolved with the same seriousness that they used in creating the situation and asking their questions. After asking such weighty questions, and even taking some side-trips into gaming sequences that could almost be described as “expressionistic,” Naughty Dog slightly shies away from giving more substantial answers to the very problems they pose. If there is any complaint to be made about the story here, it’s that there is a certain, disappointing lack of confidence that comes at the end. It’s a surprising turn for a game that’s been more concerned with a jaunty story, devil may care antics, and a carefree, adventurous disposition, but it feels like a question worth asking.Īfter two previous games of globe-hopping, fire fights, near death of loved ones and destruction on a massive scale, it’s time to stop and ask “Is this really all worth it?” It’s a fascinating question that’s worth pointing at other adventurers we’ve known, most notably Indiana Jones, and at the end of the day, like Indy, Nathan Drake must find that answer for himself through some of the most harrowing action set-pieces seen in any game to date. It’s the same ring Drake has been wearing through all the previous games, but now we get a little more light shed on both it-and Nathan’s-origins. Nathan Drake and his previous companions are all put on a quest to uncover a great secret tied to the ring of Drake’s ancestral inspiration, Sir Francis Drake. Instead, what we get in the story of UC3 is a more measured, considered examination of globe-hopping in the search of treasure. They had to crunch so hard to get the rebooted version done on time that Bruce Straley gave up making video-games.Uncharted 3 doesn’t even try to top the ridiculously gut-wrenching opening of Uncharted 2, which was probably a wise move, as just trying to escalate things would have felt both forced and ineffective. 3 clearly had production issues that 1 and 2 didn't have, and Hennig's version of 4 didn't work out. In retrospect, I'm not sure if Naughty Dog were ready to work on 2 different games at once.

Drake just says "How convenient" to try make you laugh off how sloppy the plot got. He then washes up on a beach close to where Elena is staying to get you back to the real plot.

Drake gets hit in the face, and the game goes on a random side plot for an hour to give you some boat set-pieces. When it comes to the script, you can feel the absence of Neil Druckmann and Josh Scherr (writer on every other console Uncharted game). I did like the introduction of chase sequences, and I love first hour (bar fight, young Drake) and from the airplane sequence onwards but I just think the rest of it just sort of meanders along without as much purpose as 2. Uncharted 2 is insane from Nepal onwards which is about an hour into the game. It's also paced much differently - it takes a long time to get to the notable set-pieces. I'm not surprised the scrapped version of Uncharted 4 was going to have no gunplay for the first half. Uncharted 3's gameplay is a bit more compartmentalized and focused on one thing at a time. I could just enjoy it for what it is and accept that it's not Uncharted 2 - it's not a roller coaster, and it doesn't balance and rotate between action, puzzles, platforming and set-pieces in the same way. I enjoyed 3 much more when I replayed it in the Nathan Drake Collection though. It is very good, but when I originally played Uncharted 3 it was the most disappointed I'd ever been in a video-game because Uncharted 2 was just that good.
